Number plate theft on the rise
RANDBURG – Crime in Sector 1 shopping centre parking lots.
An increase in vehicle number plate theft has been noted in Sector 1.
“There has not been a lot, but there has been an increase,” said Sector 1 Community Policing Forum Chairperson Greg Pearce.
“Most incidents are in parking lots at shopping centres and they normally take both plates.”
Though he did not say how many were taken and from where, Pearce speculated the plates are “cloned” and placed on other vehicles used for crime.
He also said newer vehicles’ plates are fastened in a different manner and are more difficult to remove, but all residents should check both their plates are on their vehicles after they leave a shopping centre.
Areas in Sector 1 include Boskruin, Bromhof, Bush Hill AH, Glen Dayson AH, Hunter’s Hill AH, Kelly Ridge, Northgate, North Riding AH, Northwold, Randpark Ridge, Sonneglans, Strijdompark and Sundowner.
