Post box computer glitch
RANDBURG - New computer system does not register people's post boxes.
Post box owners are being told their boxes do not exist, as a result of a new computer system.
When Blairgowrie resident Lawrence Milner tried to renew his Craighall Post Office post box, at the Pinegowrie Post Office in Blairgowrie, he was told his box did not exist.
Having rented the box for many years, he sought answers. The post office then temporarily resolved Milner’s problem.
His box number was given an extra digit on the computer system and when his post arrives the teller matches the new number on the mail with the original number on the box.
A teller at the Craighall Post Office, who did not wish to be named for fear of being fired, said the problem was probably occurring all over Joburg.
“This is because of a new system,” she said. “Random box numbers are no longer being accepted. The people at the top will not tell tellers how to help the customers in these situations, only that they are working on solving the problem.”
A teller at Pinegowrie Post Office, Elize Strydom, said not all post boxes or private bags were loaded onto the new computer system and often tellers at Pinegowrie have to refer clients to post offices that do not have the new computer system installed, in order to process their payments.
She also believed the problem was occurring around Johannesburg but did not know what was being done to solve it.
