Security breached

SUNDOWNER – House break-ins on the rise in Tourmaline Road, Sundowner.

Residents of Tourmaline Road in Sundowner have experienced an increase in housebreakings.

A robber gained access to Yolanda and Ralph Wissner’s property by knocking part of their front wall down. The thief stole a bicycle, a cellphone and three iPads from their car.

Yolanda claimed that vagrants living in the neighbouring overgrown Sundowner Park were responsible for crime in the area.

Apart from multiple break-ins, gate motors and electricity meters have been vandalised, and spikes placed on walls for security have been removed by thieves from homes in the area.

Ward 114 Councillor Maureen Schneemann said burglars had an easy escape route via two storm water drains in the area and the overgrown park provided hiding places. She said she had asked relevant authorities to block access to the drains. If this was not forthcoming she suggested residents form a residents association to raise money to fence off the entrance to the drains with palisade fencing.

Honeydew police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs would not say whether there had been an increase in crime, but police operations have been occurring in the area and another operation had been requested.
