Fit to fight crime

RANDBURG – Randburg police given six out of 10 for fitness.

Randburg police spokesperson Johannes Maja gave the Randburg police officers six out of 10 for fitness.

He claimed that the Randburg police are mostly fit but they generally need to improve their fitness.

“Being fit helps,” he said. “A healthy body and mind make you active and you can perform efficiently.”

He made the comment after police officers from 134 stations around Gauteng participated in aerobics at the Walter Sisulu Hall in the Randburg Sports Complex on 26 March. The aerobics session was part of the South African Police Service’s ongoing effort to make sure that its officers maintain the standard of fitness that is required.

Provincial fitness coordinator for the police, Constable Simangele Nhlengethwa, said a provincial police aerobics session is held once per month and police officers from all divisions are encouraged to participate.

“We do aerobics to help maintain a standard of physical training to be part of the police,” she explained.

“We also integrate self-defence moves into the aerobics.”

Nhlengethwa said police officers must volunteer to participate in these sessions in order to avoid affecting their duties. She further said members of community policing forums, police reservists and police youth desk personnel also participate in these sessions, as well as some members of the community. Smaller daily aerobics sessions are also held at different stations.

Maja said the Randburg police officers train at a gym every week.
