Women and girls invited to join
OLIVEDALE – Olivedale Tennis Club seeks new members.
The Olivedale Tennis Club is looking for new blood, especially women.
The club secretaty said they need more women and girls members.
Club Secretary Jill Meintjes invited women and girls to participate at the club so they can “become involved in the leagues and be club champion one day”.
The club plays teams in the Gauteng Central league and hosts its own mixed doubles league, club championships and social tennis days.
Meintjes and her friends Jackie Farell, Glen Duncan and Gail van den Berg have been playing at the club since it opened in 1995.
“Tennis is a fantastic outside social sport,” Meintjes said. “You get fresh air, release the tension you came with and make friends.”
Farell said tennis is not like squash.
“Squash is quick but with tennis you can play the whole afternoon,” she said. “You can have a beer and braai, and it is not expensive.”
Social tennis happens in groups at the club on Saturdays from 2pm or Thursdays from 6pm onwards and costs R40 per person.
Tea and cake are served and members are allowed to play at any time for free.
Membership at the club costs R1 200 per year but there are discounts for students, juniors, pensioners and couples.
The club consists of 50 members, four courts, two of which have night lights and the club plays one women team and three men teams in the Gauteng Central league.
