A broken pipe led to sewage flowing through Maria Street, Fontainebleau, for 10 days. The pipe situated on the corner of Maria Street and Elise Road, was fixed on 18 March. Pieter van Vuuren, a resident said while the sewage was flowing it caused an “unbearable foul smell” and found its way into his water supply.
Although the pipe has been fixed, sewage is still drying on the road and causes a bad smell, he explained.
Ward 99 Councillor Bruce Herbert said the sewage leak was not related to the nearby burst water pipe, on the corner of Eland Road and Elise Road, Robin Hills, but both problems were because of old equipment.
Mcdonald Mkwebula, operations manager at the Sewer Department of Joburg Water, explained that the operation took a while to fix because first they had to determine whether the sewage leak was in the Randburg depot or the Langlaagede depot’s area.
Herbert claimed that from 1 April, R30-million would be used to replace water pipes and moving fire hydrants above ground in Robin Hills.
