Residents wait for water

ROBIN HILLS – Work on water pipe in Robin Hills been going on for years.

Residents are tired of waiting for Joburg Water to finish fixing the water pipe on the corner of Eland Road and Blesbok Road, Robin Hills.

Residents allege that for the past six months, the pipe on the border of Robin Hills and Fontainebleau, has been supplying water irregularly and sometimes water would overflow through Elise Road and into their gardens and swimming pools. Pieter McDermott and Pieter van Vuuren, who reside in the area, said sometimes water flows through the street a metre wide about once or twice per week and they do not have water for a day and a half. They complained that work on the pipe has been going on for a few years but in the last six months the problems were more severe.

“Sometimes the water in my geyser is not clean,” van Vuuren said.

“I have to use a filter for the water I use.”

Ward 99 Councillor Bruce Herbert said the issue had been reported to Joburg Water and was being fixed.

Joburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe did not comment on why or when the pipe started causing problems, she only said that the “excavation has been back-filled”.

Herbert claims the problem is caused by old water equipment and that there is a project to start on 1 April which would replace the pipes and move fire hydrants above ground in Robin Hills.
