A guide on how to write short stories
RANDBURG – Dave Robbins gives advice to writers.
Author and publisher Dave Robbins gave a guide to Writers 2 000 members, about short story writing at the Inyoni Creek Clubhouse, Lyndhurst, recently.
The Writers 2 000, is a writing group with many members and committee members living in Randburg.
Those who attended the workshop learned about elements that make a short story and received advice on how to write one.
Robbins, who works for Porcupine Press, claimed that though there is no strict definition of a short story, generally, a short story has less than 7 500 words.
Below are three basic rules of writing short stories:
Panoramic writing – Writers or narrators can tell a story from a vantage point.
Dramatic writing – Stories can be told through a number of eventful episodes.
Point of view or centre of vision – The author must tell the story from a specific point of view.
Robbin has published 18 books in various subjects including travel, history, biography, fiction and socio-political analysis. He has written three volumes of short stories.
Writers 2 000 consists of members ranging from published writers to anyone interested in writing.
They meet once a month and membership fee is R130 per year.
