Some residents of Elise Road, in Fontainebleau, alleged that this road is the site of too much speeding and reckless driving.
“I call it rat racing because people skip busy roads and take residential roads around here,” said resident Pieter van Vuuren.
“All my neighbours are unhappy with the speeding. So we have sent a petition with 40 signatures to councillor Potter for any speed control measures.”
Ward 102 Councillor David Potter acknowledged that, he recently received a petition for speed control measures on the road, but said the petition did not include any signatures and he has since asked van Vuuren to acquire the signatures.
Potter said he had not forwarded the petition to City Council, because of the missing signatures.
He added, “The City receives tons of requests for traffic calming measures and implements few with council money. Residents however, have the option if their request for traffic calming is approved, to install calming measures at their own expenses.”
Furthermore, Potter, said that residents in some suburbs seek traffic calming measures in every street, but this is “just not viable” as bus routes and emergency service vehicles need to be considered, as well as the increase in noise disturbance, when vehicles break suddenly before speed bumps.
Van Vuuren responded by saying, he thought he had sent the petition to Potter with the 40 signatures, but would resend it with the signatures anyway.
Although the petition asks for any speed control measures, van Vuuren reckoned that circles and speed bumps would be most effective methods, because people ignore stop signs and circles would have to be large otherwise people would merely drive over them.
