Rea Vaya plans to spread deeper into Randburg
RANDBURG – Other Randburg suburbs to join Cresta and Windsor West as users of Rea Vaya.
The Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will stretch further into Randburg from 2016 or 2017.
This was reiterated by Rea Vaya Bus transit on its Facebook page on 8 July, which listed facts about its current stage of construction – phase 1C.
The message stated that the system will spread from the inner city of Johannesburg out to the north-east quadrant of the city– Alexandra, Sandton, Randburg, Greenstone, Ivory Park, Rabie Ridge and Midrand.
Rea Vaya buses are already operating in Windsor West and Cresta.

Therefore, although the post did not state where exactly in Randburg Rea Vaya will infiltrate, it can be assumed that areas north and east of Windsor West and Cresta will see the service.
When completed, Rea Vaya will boast a system with a total of 242 buses, 10 median stations (for people to embark and disembark) and an 86.9km route network.
It is estimated that construction will cost R3 billion.
It is also estimated that 5 700 jobs will be created during construction and for every one of these, another two jobs will be created in the cement, iron and steel industries.
“There will be about 500 permanent jobs in this bus-operating company – some of these jobs will replace jobs in the taxi industry,” the statement mentioned.
About 1 000 jobs will also be created at stations and interchanges for ambassadors, marshals, cashiers, cleaning and security.
Park and ride facilities will be made available into Sandton CBD to reduce traffic congestion.
Rea Vaya also promised “a new integrated transport plan that fuses Rea Vaya BRT, Metrobus and mini bus taxis transit networks to make it easier for commuters to access the public transport system”.
