Alex violence case postponed

FERNDALE – EFF, IFP and DA members face charges of public violence, await viewing of video.

The case involving 59 members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), facing charges of public violence during unrest in Alexandra in May, has been postponed.

The accused appeared at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court, Ferndale, on 5 August, supported by about 100 EFF supporters who danced and sang outside the court before and after proceedings.

The case was postponed to 15 September for prosecutors to scrutinise video footage of the unrest, to determine who exactly did what.

The unrest involved the burning of tyres, barricading of roads and attempts to set buildings on fire allegedly by the political party members, and followed allegations that the African National Congress (ANC) and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) tampered with votes during the 2014 general elections.

The case is being heard at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court because the court was deemed to provide more security and space (see previous story) than the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
