In response to the concerns of a resident in the area it seems that the accident prone area around Dover and Main streets where the road narrows into Elgin, continues to be a problem.
According to the resident, the high accident zone is, “as Dover passes through a residential area, past two churches in the suburb crossing lots of stop streets, a four-way stop – which is often ignored – and of course, into the notorious bend after the NGK Church.”
Ward councillor 102 David Potter comments, “A lot of the issues are not only the responsibility of the JRA but enforcement by JMPD. Motorists also need to take control of their actions and abide by the rules of the road in the interests of road safety for all… It must be noted that installing traffic calming measures is not always a solution and residents must be cautious and mindful of this.”
Comment from Ward councillor 104 Mike Wood in his address to the JRA says, “The Armco barriers have not been replaced and it was my
understanding that concrete barriers would be installed as an interim measure. I have spoken to the Randburg Depot about the installation
of rumble stripes on the road and they are liaising with traffic engineering.”
In regards to setting up a road block for the motorists, Wayne Minnaar JMPD spokesperson suggests, ”if motorists do not drive safely or abide by the rules of the road accidents will not stop.”
For a further measure, JMPD director of operations Sipho Dlepu was contacted and forwarded the complaint onto acting deputy director of JMPD Mike Smith who commented, ”We will look into the complaint. I have certainly not been made aware of this problem, particularly around recklessness and driving under the influence and my office also hasn’t been alerted to this particular road as being a “hotspot”.
I will randomly deploy Metro Police Officers from various shifts to look into the concerns raised and do the necessary law enforcement.”
