Summer rains result in flooding in Ferndale

FERNDALE – Road floods frequently due to rain and silt, making it dangerous in emergencies.

Vine Avenue in Ferndale flooded again on 17 November, due to a combination of heavy rain and a blockage in Ferndale Spruit.

The road floods frequently, a problem reported to government officials during an inspection in September (see previous article).

It is believed that silting, a process whereby fine particles travel downstream and block a river, leaves rain water nowhere to go but onto the road.

According to resident Ig Vermaak, “every time it rains the road gets flooded – which is dangerous in emergency situations.” He added that the road is now flooding faster and more frequently than it did in the past.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter said that he and Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood will champion the issue with local government to have the issue resolved.

Furthermore, Wood said that he will meet with City Power, Johannesburg Roads Agency and the Department of Environment and Infrastructure Services to find a solution. Questions were sent to the Department of Environment and Infrastructure Services, and comment is awaited.
