Taxi rank prays for road safety

RANDBURG CBD – Government and Police pray for road safety.

Government and police officials attended a Prayer Day at the Randburg Taxi Rank on 4 December.

The event was organised by the Northern Taxi Liaison Committee (NTLC), which is based at the rank in Randburg CBD, and the African National Congress (ANC) Parliamentary Constituency Office.

Officials prayed mainly for road safety during the festive season, but also against violence against women and children as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

“People associate taxis with violence,” said NTLC chairperson Charles Moloto.

“So we thought that we should do this to tell people that even in this industry people do kneel down and talk to God that He may help us,” Mone Legwati prayed, representing Stakeholder Engagement of the Office of the Gauteng Premier. She asked God to touch the taxi industries around the world, to keep drivers, commuters and passengers safe.

Stakeholder Liaison for the Office of the MMC for Transport Tebogo Mogashoa argued that people should practise what they preach by not drinking and driving. Randburg Police Station Commander Brigadier Lettie Hugo asked God to keep His hand of protection over Randburg, and then discussed street robberies and corruption. Metro Police Superintendent Connie Maila commented that she was disappointed there were not many taxi drivers or passengers at the prayer, because they needed prayer.

She added that the community needed to come together to fight crime. Randburg Community Policing Forum Chairperson Sandy Andrew said that the taxi drivers were very much part of the Randburg community. ANC spokesperson for Randburg Wellington Ntsodo and Linden Police Station Commander Colonel Mabalana Mohale were also present.
