He was introduced to coach and mentor Corno Klaver who urged him to learn the intricate game of chess.

”Chess is a thinking game which I like. It also helps a lot with my school works because it teaches you to take your time and think five moves ahead simultaneously,” said Tristan.

In 2014, Tristan competed in the Chess Nationals where he ranked second out of about 40 to 45 players from all over the country.

He says,”I got colours by playing well and consistently throughout the year. The board then selects you based on your performances and wins.”

”I practise a lot but I enjoy soccer. My favourite team is Arsenal and next year I hope to play rugby at Roosevelt High,” comments
