Women canoeists paddle to the top

RANDBURG – Two women of Dabulamanzi Canoe Club paddle to the top places at the Emmerantia Dam.

Women canoeists finished on top the places after a gruelling Jozi Dusi Assault training event was hosted at Emmarentia Dam, by the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club on 11 January.

Lynn Morris of Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, and Alexandra Jensen both residents in Randburg, came in second and third place respectively.

Morris finished in 02:34:00 and Alexandra clocked 02:44:00 after a tough race which included more than 60 paddlers.

The paddlers enjoyed the challenging 20km training race which included two portages up to 4.5km and were spoiled by sponsored food and prize monies from Standard Bank and Adreach, with Lucozade breaking through the Hansa barrier to provide non-alcoholic energy replacement refreshment!

Soweto’s racing team members dominated the top finishing positions with the winner Loveday Zondi who lives in Greenside, in a time of 1:40:00.

Having also won the previous day’s Dusi seeding race at East Rand Kayak in Benoni, Zondi has etched his place as top favourite for Gauteng’s top Dusi finisher.

Siseko Ntondini, who lives in Albertskroon, finished second, as first U23.

After the race, paddlers and non-paddlers hopped onto the lake to participate in the few hundred metres dedicated to ANYTHING THAT FLOATS which generated much laughter and enjoyment for the spectators – with no paddles, hands only sprint out – which was also won by Zondi making it a Hat Trick of a weekend.

The Gauteng Canoe Union calendar has scheduled a number of double-header races in the next few weekends for superb Dusi preparation!
