LISTEN: Agnes to change Kya Sand
NORTHRIDING – Agnes Mojela hopes to improve her community through social work.
Agnes Mojela was awarded a bursary by Hot 91.9fm to study social work.
The Kya Sand resident works as an office assistant at the radio station. “Since January Mojela helps with anything we need like coffee, cleaning, [and] messages. She really enjoys making sure that everyone is happy,” said station manager Lloyd Madurai. On 30 April, Mojela received an amazing surprise from Joburg’s Hottest Bursary. Colleague Christi Rode nominated her for the bursary.
Listen to her spotlight on live radio:
Mojela will be studying a degree or diploma in social work at Unisa in 2016. “I grew up in a big family of seven people. We moved around a lot in order to make our life better,” said Mojela. Her reason for wanting to study social work is due to her desire to uplift the community. “My family was supported by social workers all the time. In Mpumalanga they would visit many families in the area and support them with food, which we really needed.”
She would like to work with orphans and families, especially those in Kya Sand. “I was lucky that during the fire at the squatter camp, I did not lose my brick home. I see the people there suffering and it breaks my heart.”
Hayley Owen, a key member of Joburg’s Hottest Bursary said, “She is a great candidate to study social work. The country really needs more social workers. Agnes really wants to uplift her life and that of her daughter.” In her spare time Mojela gives leftover food from the studio to people in the streets.
