NPO Break the Shame, held their first 4km anti-drug walk on 19 September at Ferndale High School.
The walk was aimed at creating drug awareness and it commenced and ended at the school.
About 1 200 people attended the walk, some with banners stating, I am a recovering addict and proud of it.
Founder Elani Richardson said the purpose of the walk was to ensure recovering addicts are not ashamed of their addiction, and to create drug awareness in the community.
“Break the Shame is a way of letting recovering addicts know it is okay, and that there are people in their shoes who can understand and help them,” said Richardson.
Break the Shame was founded to mentor recovering addicts.
Richardson said recovering addicts often feel ashamed of their addiction and would rather avoid seeking help to prevent the shame.
She is also a recovering addict herself and said she is proud to say so.
Richardson is also the founder of the Moon Addiction Recovering centre that supplies recovering addicts with after-rehabilitation counselling.
Adventurer André Moll carried an extra 50 kg of sponsored food items in return for sponsorships.
The goal was to raise R10 000.
Moll has also lost two friends to drugs and said he has great compassion toward recovering addicts.
Randburg CPF chairperson Sandy Andrew said the walk was a fantastic way of ensuring that the public is aware of what is swept underneath the carpet.
