Both sides squandered most chances that could have won the Gauteng Development League encounter, but the players produced high-quality football that kept fans entertained.
Sevens coach Presley Mokae admitted that it was a difficult and physical game. “When we came here, we knew how stubborn they were, but we were well prepared for the game,” Mokae said. “We planned to build from the back and hit them on transition. We need to perfect our scoring opportunities, and we have a lot to work on regarding finishing.”
Despite enjoying more ball possession, the Randburg defence made costly mistakes and allowed Sevens Academy to slowly grow back into the game. The hosts started the match with intent, using their home-ground advantage. Their attacking players combined well, but were let down by poor finishing in the final third.
The home side took the lead deep in the first half when Gladwin Baloyi put the hosts in front from the right flank. After taking the lead, the home team became casual on the ball, allowing the visitors back into the game. Sevens Academy set up traps and pressed Randburg high up the pitch. Their resilience paid off as striker Molemo Maleele won the ball in Randburg’s half to equalise before half-time.

The visitors continued where they left off in the second half. Maleele missed a chance in the opening minutes, before the visitors took the lead with a goal by Teboho Tuba. The hosts responded quickly through a free kick from outside the box by captain Uzayr Bowers. Despite putting on pressure, Randburg could not unlock the Sevens defence, and both teams shared the points.
Dropping points at home was a big blow for coach Fiston Kutuka. He said the team was supposed to score more goals with the chances they created and expressed disappointment with the defensive performance. “The team played well, but we just struggled with scoring, and the errors at the back cost us,” Kutuka said. “We are going back to work on dealing with the long balls and also in finishing.”
