GALLERY: Delta Environmental Centre Expo 2015

BLAIRGOWRIE – The Delta Environmental Centre hosted their annual Energy Conversations Expo 2015 to create awareness about the use of energy.

The Delta Environmental Centre is passionate about raising awareness about energy and climate change in South Africa to young people. As part of their Energy Conversations Programme, Delta Environmental Centre hosted an Energy Conversations Expo on 30 September.

The programme gave pupils an opportunity to showcase their energy-saving campaigns and experiences with their colleagues and individuals from the environmental sector.

It is an annual event that takes place once a year during the same period and includes a three-hour excursion to the centre for each school.

Executive officer of Delta Environmental Centre, Diana Beaton welcomed guests to the Expo and emphasised that everyone was looking forward to viewing the exhibits and discussing each schools’ campaign with pupils and teachers.

The Expo, which is funded by Shell South Africa included 79 pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

They participated in the programme in order to broaden their knowledge on energy and climate-change issues and is also part of their subjects in natural sciences and geography.

Schools’ programme coordinator Dana Claudwell said that the Expo helps to build confidence and self-esteem of pupils while educating them on energy conservation.

“By creating an awareness around the use of energy and how it has an impact on the climate change that we are all experiencing, we are educating the youth to become more aware of these implications,” Claudwell said.

Judges Thandi Shadrack, Malusi Vatsha and Itumeleng Motlhapi said the process was difficult because they saw each school as a winner,

But, Grade 9 pupils from the natural sciences class of Lingitjhudu Secondary School and Grade 11 Benoni High School were announced as the winners of the Expo.

Claudwell said the Energy Conversations Expo 2015 was another successful day of dynamic interaction and conversations among pupils, teachers and environmental organisations.
