Randburg Licence Testing Centre under fire

MALANHOF – Newly-appointed manager at the Randburg Licence Testing Centre commits to turning things around at the testing station, starting with driving instructors who have no permits.

Driving instructors who make use of the Randburg Licence Testing Centre are complaining about unregistered driving instructors and the corruption that they allege takes place at the testing station.

According to driving instructor Elsabe Burger, there are many unregistered driving instructors who park outside the testing station and advertise to potential learner drivers. “These illegal driving schools are here everyday, recruiting learners who are not aware that the driving instructor is not registered,” she said. Burger, who has been an instructor for 33 years, said that illegal instructors were involved in corruption with some of the personnel who work inside the station.

“If our learners do not pay a bribe they are failed and must retest again, which is unacceptable,” Burger added. “Another problem that we are having is that it is taking very long for us to renew our driving instructor’s permits and get sent from pillar to post,” she said. Newly-appointed manager at the station Tata Mabiya said that he was aware of the problems that existed at the station but added that he had called a meeting with the instructors on 2 October to address these issues.

“At the meeting we spoke about the issues surrounding the instructors and we have taken steps to remove the unlicensed instructors from the centre,” Mabiya said. He pointed out that he was on a mission to turn things around at the station and that law and order was being restored. He added that instructors had to renew their permits two months before they expired as the renewal process took time to process.

“Learners must ensure that their driving instructors have legal permits by asking to see the permits or calling at the testing station,” he said. “We want to clean up the licensing industry and restore service delivery.” Mabiya pointed out that the testing station would now be open strictly for pupils and students on three Saturdays in a month, for learner’s and driver’s tests as well as for vehicle testing.
