Santa Shoebox project welcomes donations

RANDBURG – Good Samaritans have an opportunity to make a difference by donating towards the Santa Shoebox Project.

When different members from the community come together to contribute to a worthy cause, more can be done to assist those in need of help.

The Santa Shoebox Project is an initiative by kidz2kidz that collects and distributes gifts to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Santa Shoebox Project, which was established in 2006, started off with 180 shoe box gifts. This number increased over the years to 100 000 boxes last year.

The organisation is a non-profit organisation that is run by a group of volunteers and supported by the many donations from good Samaritans. Hoggarth said that residents can make a pledge by selecting children in need they would like to give items such as toothpaste, stationery and clothing and packaging these items in a shoe box..

Alternatively, residents are welcome to donate certain items that will be placed in a box by volunteers if they cannot provide a shoe box.

Residents can drop off the shoe boxes or items at Rhema Bible Church between 28 and 30 October or at Stor–Age in Constantia Kloof.

Over 450 000 gifts have been distributed to orphanages, children’s homes and care centres in South Africa and countries as far as Namibia over the years.

Project co-coordinator Julia Hogarth pledged her first box in 2011 and was compelled to play a more active role in the organisation the following year.

“What I find fulfilling is seeing the children’s faces when they receive their Santa Shoebox. For some of the children this is the only gift they will receive during Christmas,” she said.
