Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) is in the process of finalising a feasibility study for the widening of Conrad Drive Bridge.
This includes a traffic analysis of the area which could influence the future layout of the Conrad Drive and Jan Smuts intersection.
JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said on 8 December that the entity welcomed input and comments from residents on their projects.
She said the report by resident Brian Segar will be forwarded onto their consultants for their consideration and comment.
“The original project scope was to investigate the feasibility, cost and technical requirements for the widening of Conrad Drive and bridge, inclusive of erosion protection,” she explained.
According to her, a capacity of the intersection was included as part of the traffic study.

“However, at this stage, it would be premature to comment on whether additional design improvements for this intersection will be undertaken,” she indicated.
The consultant’s response to JRA’s feedback on the proposed geometric upgrades has been received but the traffic report has not yet been approved by JRA.
Peters-Scheepers further explained that a consultant was appointed for basic planning and preliminary design. She said the issue of additional land required for widening has also been identified as an aspect which will affect implementation time frames in addition to an environmental impact assessment as well as water-use licence considerations.
The JRA will engage the community on these proposed changes as well as on any traffic impact at the appropriate time. “Construction is expected to commence in the 2016/17 financial year – budget permitting,” she concluded.
Segar said he conducted a detailed assessment of the problems and their solutions.
“Widening will not be straightforward, but need not be difficult either. But all the peripherals ought to be done first, so the actual traffic situation can be evaluated,” he said.
