Armed with brooms, refuse bags and garden tools, they worked tirelessly to sweep the pavements, remove litter and clear weeds that had gradually taken over sections of the walkway.
Their efforts did not stop there. The volunteers also tackled the ongoing problem of illegally dumped rubble along the roadside, working hard to clear the unwanted debris and restore the area’s appearance.
Taking action against illegal dumping
Among the volunteers was Rise Mzansi’s Ward 101 candidate Olwethu Mhaga. He explained that he got involved with the initiative to try and beautify and restore the area.
“Community is important, and we need to get out and see what is happening in our areas and take charge. That’s how we will rebuild and turn around the situations we are facing,” he said.
