Cyril and MaryAnne Shaw celebrate 49 years of marriage and line dancing

From meeting in 1970s Rhodesia to importing Nashville tunes, a local couple share how four decades of synchronised steps kept their marriage strong.

Some love stories begin with a glance, others with a conversation, but for Cyril and MaryAnne Shaw, their beautiful journey began on the dance floor.

In 1975, in Rhodesia, two hearts met, and what followed was a romance built on love, passion, partnership and a shared love for dance.

It was love at first sight, and from that magical moment, Cyril and MaryAnne began a journey that would see them become not only life partners but also dancing partners.

Their connection blossomed, and before long, they were married, beginning a lifelong dance together through all the seasons of life.

“We were both ballroom dancers. We met at a dancing studio. I was in the Rhodesian army, and she happened to be working there as well. We both loved dancing, so we were compatible; we had something in common,” said Cyril.

In 1981, they immigrated to South Africa, opening a new chapter filled with fresh opportunities, dreams and adventures. It was here that their journey into line dancing began, adding another spark to their shared passion.

“When we came here, ballroom and Latin dance weren’t really much of a demand. But then 40 years ago, we actually heard about a thing called line dancing, which was never heard of in South Africa,” said Cyril.

Cyril contacted a company in Nashville, Tennessee, which sent them music, and they have been line dancing for nearly 40 years.

Over the years, Cyril and MaryAnne have celebrated achievements, collected treasured memories and continued to nurture the bond that first brought them together. Through every step, turn and rhythm, their love has remained at the heart of their story.

“I’m grateful to have met such a wonderful man in my life. Through every sort of trial, issue, and thing that we go through, we’ve got each other to count on,” said MaryAnne.

As they celebrate 49 years of marriage, their journey stands as a testament to the beauty of growing together, supporting each other and keeping the music alive.
