Charities give back to animals in 2015
RANDBURG – These four charities made an effort to give back to animals in need by donating time, money and much-needed animal awareness.
In 2015 these organisations gave back to a good cause, in raising funds and awareness for animals in need. They opened their hearts and therefore made the roundup for the top four charity causes in 2015.
The Kya Sand Community Veterinary Clinic, held one of their frequent clinics at the Pipeline Informal Settlement on 31 January. Residents made full use of the clinic by taking their animals to be treated. The clinic provided services such as vaccination, deworming, flea and tick dipping as well as sterilisation at a reduced cost.
The Johannesburg Exotic Reptile Expo took place at the Randburg Sports Complex on 18 and 19 April. Ban Animal Trading SA held a silent protest to make people aware of the illegal trade of exotic animals. Smaragda Louw, a founding member, said that trading in exotic animals is illegal as these reptiles are kept in small boxes their entire life. “We just stood there in silence with our boards about Ban Animal Trading,” said Louw.
On 19 September Randburg SPCA held their first fun walk at Delta Park. The event cost walkers a R50 donation to participate. Members of the community were invited to join the walk in support of the SPCA, and also to bring their dogs along to enjoy the day. Some of the dogs from the SPCA also participated in the walk.
Benoni Bunny Park Animals “911” Group, hosted a Harley Davidson drive at Hyundai Cresta on 24 October to help sickly animals in the park. A large container was filled with animal food and driven to the park. The Bunny Park in Benoni is home to about 2 000 bunnies, some sheep, cows, goats, pigs and two donkeys. The rescue group aims to better the lives of these animals and also raise awareness on ill-treatment of animals.
