Pupils donate blood

ROBIN HILLS – One unit of blood can save three lives, and the SANBS is in dire need of blood.

The King’s School Robin Hills once again did their part to support a worthy cause. Pupils had an opportunity on 20 April to participate in a blood drive at their school.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in Krugersdorp came to the school to gather much-needed blood. Mokabanyane Kekana from SANBS said that they host every blood drive with a specific target. “Our target for this blood drive was to get 31 units.” One unit is enough to save three lives as it is divided into three parts, red cells, white cells and plasma.

“It is good for pupils to make a difference and take part in a worthy cause,” said the principal of the school, Jenni Joubert.

A pupil, Pamela Buhr said that this is her second time donating blood and she did it to save lives. Nicholas Rademeyer in Grade 11 said that this is already his third time that he donated blood. “I want to save lives and give back,” said Rademeyer.

Michael Poortier looked nervous as this was his first time donating blood. “My friend donated blood in the first term that is why I decided to do the same,” said Poortier.

Kekana urged residents to donate blood as blood is needed every day. He added that people can go onto their website www.sanbs.org.za to find out where and when the next blood drive will be, so that they can donate blood.
