Express your creativity through ceramics
OLIVEDALE – Ceramist welcomes people of all ages to come and enjoy the process of creating items from clay.
Ceramist Alan Firkser believes that it is your mind that limits what you create. If you can think of something, you can make it.
The Olivedale resident has been in his profession for 46 years. He described how he has been teaching his ceramics class since 1983 and established a pottery class with his wife. The ceramics classes currently take place at the Ferndale Recreation Centre.
“I have had an interest in pottery since I was 16 years old. I studied towards a diploma in ceramics in the mid ’70s. People of all ages are welcome to participate in my classes. They can learn the craft of pottery, sculpting, modelling, ceramic paintings and wheel pottery. Children and adults enjoy my classes where they can express themselves through sculpting,” said Firkser.
He describes clay as a malleable thing which you can make any object with. The object is then dried and goes through a hardening process in order to dry out chemically combined water.
“The pottery can get painted, glazed, refined at a higher temperature and once completed it can be used.”
Firkser added, “I believe it is a lovely outlet to develop your hand skills, teach people patience and an opportunity to express their creativity. People can create items such as pots, cups, sculptural and practical items.”
