How do residents feel about the admissions policy for Gauteng public schools?
JOBURG – The Constitutional Court's decision gives the Gauteng Department of Education the authority to determine the minimum standards in admission policies for public schools.
Tyler Brown: I agree with the new law. When I was applying to a school, it was a tough process for my parents because of the area I stayed in.
Justin Calleja: I think it is a good law as long as people can afford to pay for their schooling. I find the previous system limits the quality education people can get.
The Constitutional Court recently approved new regulations that would let the Gauteng Department of Education have the final say in the admission of pupils in public schools in Gauteng.
The new regulations will open access to the feeder zone policy, which states that pupils are required to live in close proximity to schools. Gauteng Premier David Makhura welcomes the decision by the Constitutional Court and said that the decision will transform access to education in South Africa.
As with any recently introduced law, residents have their own concerns and opinions about our country’s laws. Residents were asked how they feel about the new regulations being approved.
Jina Bellini: A number of people struggle to get into better public schools. It will be unfair for them to find schools in other areas.
Riaan Janicke: I believe the new law has its pros and cons. Wealthy schools want the benefit of enrolling wealthy pupils from a wealthy area. What about the schools in disadvantaged areas? I believe they will suffer under the new law.
Kgolofelo Makgato: I believe the new law will be positive for us parents. It was difficult to find a school for one of my children because they only accepted people who stay in the area. It will now be easier to find a school.
Mzimase Mcelu: I believe the recent law will make it harder for the pupils who stay in surrounding areas to find space in schools. The positive aspect of it is that everyone will have better opportunities to further their education.
Larisa Goga: I think the new law is a good thing for people from disadvantaged backgrounds who can also get the best education. Although, I believe they must also consider the cost factor.
