Sweating for cancer
PRAEGVILLE – A group of dedicated friends and family tackled a spinning class in aid of a good cause.
Fouche Deetlefs and over 30 of his friends and family broke a sweat for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) at Randburg Virgin Active, marking his first big fundraiser as one of the SA Bachelor and Bachelorette of the Year finalists.
SA Bachelor and Bachelorette, launched by Copperstone Promotions, aims to find South Africa’s most eligible bachelor and bachelorette. These candidates must be older than 20, single and actively involved with a charity they wish to fully support and create awareness for. Through its many events, the competition has raised more than R650 000 for various charities, although Cansa remains its main charity.
Deetlefs, a proud Joburger, said although he has not been directly affected by Cancer, supporting Cansa means a lot to him and that winning the competition is not his main objective.
Watch Deetlefs’ introduction into the competition:
“Being able to make a difference, however small, in someone’s life is what it is all about to me,” he said.
The corporate ladder climber (Deetlefs is about to start his new job as an International Key Accounts Manager) said he plans to implement what he learned about building relationships in the corporate world into the competition that “takes a lot of commitment and effort”.
But this will not be the first time Deetlefs is chosen as a finalist. In 2013 he held the same title, but due to work responsibilities, he sadly withdrew. This year, however, the family man has his plans in order and hopes to help create as much awareness about Cansa and the Talk initiative the competition has embarked on. Tolerance, appreciation, literacy and kindness (Talk) are values the finalists aim to incorporate into all they do.
“At the Spinning for Cansa event, I focussed on appreciation. We need to appreciate each other and especially our health.
“Virgin Active really opened their doors for us. The class was packed with energy and I got a lot of positive feedback,” he said.
The class was sponsored mainly by Yukon House, where Deetlefs will host his next event, Cuppa for Cansa.
“It’s about being less of yourself and more for others”.
Deetlefs’ one hour Spinning for Cansa class raised over R10 000 in aid of cancer awareness and support.
The finals will be held in November where South Africa’s most eligible Bachelor and Bachelorette will be announced.
