Restoration seems just out of reach for Randpark Ridge
RANDPARK RIDGE – Residents are tired of the rubble and soil left behind by Huawei fiber installation.
Residents of Patrys Road and Biskop Place are fed up with the mess left in the wake of Huawei installations in the area.
One such resident, Mark Gathercole, has been inconvenienced by Huawei, who have been contracted by Telkom to lay fiber optic cables, since mid-May. Huawei has since ceased to work on the two streets but left mounds of soil and old pieces of tar on the verges.
Gathercole’s verge, in particular, was left barren and he has since then started landscaping the verge again. After many complaints to Huawei, the company has agreed to reinstate the verge. However, Gathercole feels he has done most of the work and has been left to wait for Huawei to replace the grass.
“Besides not being able to access our pedestrian gate there is now no parking on the pavement. Dust from the loose soil blows over the wall and into my pool, which I now have to backwash regularly,” he said.
Gathercole adds that most residents just wants those accountable to show their commitment and finish what they started.
Portia Mvubu, media affairs manager for Huawei South Africa confirmed, “It is very important to Huawei to work closely with the communities in which we operate. Right now Huawei is assisting carrier operators with the FTTX project installations (fiber to the home and curb, among others).
The construction may cause some inconvenience for local residents, but once the project is done, the local residents can be benefit from it.”
On the restoration of the verges, Mvubu said, “We have very strict standard processes in place for our on-site construction, and residents can complain directly to our sub-contractors on site who have been informed and should follow our standard work process to provide quality services.”
