Local Drug Action Committee aims to fight drugs in Randburg

KENSINGTON B – Local Drug Action Committee aims to create awareness about drugs in Randburg.

The Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) has been initiated to create awareness about the danger of drug use as well as to prevent residents from using drugs.

Nyiko Ngwenya, a social worker from the City of Johannesburg said that there was an increasing scourge of drugs in Randburg and that the LDAC would be joined by other stakeholders in their fight against drugs. The meeting was held at the Randburg Police Station in Kensington B.

“The drugs that are found in Randburg and surrounding areas are dagga, cocaine, nyaope, cat and ecstasy. We want residents to be aware of the drug activities in their area, as its happening on a daily basis,” she said.

Ngwenya explained that drug use led to criminal activities such as domestic abuse, theft, robberies, house break-ins and even hijackings. She urged parents to be on the lookout for signs of drug use in their children and added that the signs include red eyes, hallucinations, an untidy appearance, either sleep deprived or sleeping excessively, and they have either a big appetite or no appetite at all.

“Our aim as LDAC is to primarily create awareness and we will be doing this through door-to-door campaigns, marches, and school holiday programmes,” she said.

The committee will be meeting again on 21 September and Ngwenya urged residents to attend the meeting as drugs were an issue that affected everyone.

She added that the Randburg LDAC would be working alongside the Randburg SAPS, Randburg CPF, rehab centres, Gauteng Department of Education, faith-based organisations as well as the provincial department of social development.
