Wits poll results to be announced soon
BRAAMFONTEIN – Wits University will announce the results of the opinion poll of students and staff today.
As students wait for the results of the opinion poll by Wits University on whether they want the university to open on Monday 3 October, the university prepares to resume academic activities.
Deputy vice chancellor Andrew Crouch and other staff members were seen entering the lifts en route to Senate House while cleaners were mopping the floors and tidying up.
The poll was conducted via SMS and e-mail after the students interdict against it failed at the Johannesburg High Court.
Wits student leaders have vowed to continue protesting until education throughout the country is free for all. Students were supposed to go to the National Treasury in Pretoria but the Wits SRC announced via Twitter this morning that it was rescheduled to allow other universities to particpate.
Senior communications officer from Wits University Shirona Patel said that currently the results were currently being verified by Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo, one of the top auditing companies in the country.
Students will meet at Solomon Mahlangu House this afternoon to discuss further plans.
Patel said that currently some academic staff are holding a gathering on the library lawns in support of the students’ cause for free education.
