UPDATE: Randburg pedestrian Bridge goes down

RANDBURG CBD – The first phase of removing the Randburg pedestrian bridge was done on the evening of 17 October.

Work to remove the pedestrian bridge in the Randburg CBD started on the evening of 17 October.

This is part of the City of Joburg’s project to upgrade Hill Street in Randburg CBD which is led by the Johannesburg Development Agency. The agency is about to complete phase one of a three-phase public environment upgrade which has included the renewal of the storm water system, the installation of new lighting, new paving, new public seating, new planter boxes and trees along the street.

The removal of the bridge on the corner of Jan Smuts and Bram Fischer Drive is the final part of phase one. “This bridge was built by private property owners many years ago and was the centre of a legal dispute with the City of Joburg,” said Ward 102 councillor David Potter.

He said the City subsequently decided to remove the bridge. “Further extensive upgrades are being discussed for Randburg,” he said. The road closures from 8pm until 4am were expected to end on the 31 October.

The road closures took place at the following intersections:

Corner of Dover Street and Bram Fischer Drive

Corner of Noreen Street and Bram Fischer Drive

Corner of Jan Smuts and Bram Fischer Drive

The Jan Smuts’ entrance to the taxi rank

Corner of Jan Smuts and Selkirk Avenue

Corner of Harley Street and Bram Fischer Drive.
