Police declare 3 shopping centres safe, after bomb threats

NORTH RIDING – Three shopping centres in Joburg are declared safe and open for business, after receiving bomb threats on the same day.

The head of communications for the Douglasdale Police Station, Captain Mpho Kgasoane, confirmed the three bomb threats that were reported at Lonehill Shopping Centre, Bel-Air Shopping Centre and Carlswald Lifestyle Shopping Centre today (30 October).

“There was indeed a bomb threat, as the police, K-9 Unit and bomb squad immediately reported to the scene,” she said.

Kgasoane stated that after hours of inspection, they came to a conclusion that the threats were false. “We can now declare the shopping centres safe and open for business.”

“Further investigation of these bomb threats will be conducted, as we want to convict the culprits involved in these threats. We also appeal to the community to come forth and help the police with any information regarding these threats,” Kgasoane said.

Michelle Townsend, property portfolio manager for the Tintswalo Property Group added that Lonehill Shopping Centre, Bel-Air Shopping Centre and Carlswald Lifestyle Shopping Centre are now declared safe by the police. “We can safely state that the centres are clean and can be open for business. We would also like to thank the police for their prompt and professional service,” Townsend said.
