Help Zandspruit residents get warm this winter

ZANDSPRUIT – Randburg residents are requested to donate winter clothes to help keep residents of Zandspruit warm this winter

The Black Orange Kairos, a non-profit organisation is asking members of the public to help them keep residents from Zandspruit informal settlement warm this winter.

The organisation officially started this initiative at the beginning of June this year and plans on doing it annually.

“We have realised there are a significant number of families who lose their homes due to shack fires and are therefore, displaced. During this season the families and individuals are exposed to the harshest conditions yet we find that so many people have excess clothes in good condition that they do not use or just want to give away,” said Bafana Nhlapo from the organisation.

He said their aim was to restore the hope of the destitute and those in need and set them on a path towards rebuilding their lives. “In the process we want to remind them that there are people who care about their plight,” he said.

He said they were specifically looking for winter clothes in this initiative but also accept sanitary pads, school shoes, stationery and, where necessary, monetary donations as well.

“We encourage people to inform their friends and families about the campaign and encourage them to give. They can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram to participate in other projects we do.

“It would also be great if we get corporate and private partners for the Mandela Day event and other projects we do,” he said.

Black Orange Kairos was founded and registered in 2013 by Bafana Nhlapo, Tebogo Lukhele and Tshepo Lesiba who are all professionals in their fields and who hail from Orange Farm.

They have worked with over 10 schools for school shoe donation drives in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

“We have worked with the University of the Witwatersrand, Nedbank and Rotary over the years. We are now expanding our reach beyond learners and hope to build enough capability to respond to various emergency situations, play our part in educating the nation and be enablers to thousands of girl children who lose approximately one year of school for every five-year period due to a lack of sanitary pads,” he said.

Donors can call Nhlapo for donation arrangements.
