Hot 91.9FM and team build a home for the Tshazi family
NORTH RIDING – 67 minutes on Mandela Day saw one house being 'build' on radio's hottest breakfast.
It was one special moment for a lucky family on Mandela Day, as Hot 91.9FM and sponsors committed to building their dream home.
The radio team as well as BriDev, who have been involved in the project since its inception, took up the challenge to have a ‘phone-a-thon’ and SMS line to achieve their goal. The dream was to collect enough material, household items, cash donations (for the land) and a construction team to build a home for the family.

The recipient of the home is a mother, Nonsikelelo Alice Tshazi, who has had a tough journey through life so far. She and her family have been through some rough times including being victims of violent crimes and deaths in the family.
Tshazi and her husband, Caison Hadebe, along with their children Bongile Tshazi (21), Fikile Tshazi (17), Buhle Tshazi (15) and Msizi Tshazi (11), huddled into the small studio on 18 July. There was not a dry eye in sight as they were interviewed by breakfast host Darren Scott.
He spoke to them about their harrowing journey and how the team was going to work hard to build them a home.
It was a nerve-racking 67 minutes at the station with every donation being greatly appreciated.

The Tshazi family sat in anticipation with huge smiles every time the phone rang with a new contribution. The house should take approximately one year to build from scrap.
Scott said, “I am very happy with the turnout of donations although I had no doubt that we would achieve it this year. We always get great responses and this year it was nice to see new sponsors getting on board.”
