Kya Sand pets get help from community clinic
KYA SAND – The South African Veterinary Association held a clinic for animals in the Kya Sand informal settlement.
The South African Veterinary Association held a clinic for animals at the informal settlement on 2 December.
The clinic was run by Dr Clare Speedy and is called a Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC).

The Kya Sand CVC provides a clinic once a month, for a small fee, and do vaccinations, deworming and treatment of ticks and fleas for dogs and cats.
Director of the Kya Sand CVC Claudia Cloete said, “The clinic went well and we saw many people bring their pets for all types of care.
“We had a beautiful clinic and ended the year with kids bringing their pets for their last check-ups… Most people brought their dogs and cats.
“We believe that education is an important part of the service we provide and we gave out booklets about the importance of providing shelter, vaccinations, sterilization and care, to the community.”
Animals which required sterilization were transported to Dr Speedy’s clinic in Lammermoor.
Cloete continued, “We were also there to teach people about the benefits of animal companionship… It is well known to improve your health, lowering blood pressure, lifting depression and creating exercise opportunities.
“The clinic also served to teach compassion for others… The clinics are not only to treat the animals but provide a service to the people as well.”
The clinic was part of a veterinary care initiative that is part of 21 clinics held countrywide.
Cloete added, “We want to thank our lovely vets and volunteers for all their love and support throughout the year, and special thanks to Klarika Nomsa for spreading the love around the informal settlements.
“We would also like to thank Walk Haven’s Terrie and Emma for sponsoring Christmas boxes for the Kya Sand animals.”

The clinics are run by veterinarians who donate their time, and the clinic does their own fundraising, receiving support from the South African Veterinary Association CVC for the cost of veterinary supplies needed.
The clinic is always seeking new volunteers and will also put dates up for next year’s clinic in December in the Kya Sand informal settlement.
