If you happened to spot a pirate or maybe even a fairy or two, they must have been headed to Sharonlea Primary School where they recently celebrated literacy week.
The principal of the school, Carla Hercules, said they started off the week by inviting The Travelling Bookshop and the children had the opportunity to buy some of their favourite books.
“They chose their favourite characters from the books they read and dressed up like them for the day.”
She added that prizes were given for best dressed, read some books and did a show and tell too.

Hercules, dressed in a fairy costume, shared that this year the most common character was Maya the bee, the main character in The Adventures of Maya the Bee, which is a character taken from a German book which has since been published in many languages.
“There were also many pirates as well as, of course, all the Marvel characters. Teachers also went all out with their costumes.”

Such days are important in schools as they not only promote literacy, they also show how reading can be lots of fun.
“Some children can identify with the characters and it was interesting to hear why the children chose certain characters and how these roles can make them feel confident and powerful. It makes the children feel special and they look forward to this day,” said Hercules.
The travelling bookshop is still at the school, with parents buying more books for their children to read.

“We realise that parents do not have the time to take their child to bookstores anymore, hence, why we invited The Travelling Bookshop to the school so that parents can come at their own leisure.”
Books that were bought quickly were books by Roald Dahl, Harry Potter Series and Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
