Promoting grassroots soccer in the community

NORTH RIDING – Giving back to the community takes just one soccer ball.

Coaches of North Riding team Bantwana College Football Club spent four hours in Mzimhlope, Soweto giving back to those in the sport they are most passionate about.

Coaches Liezl Windvogel, Mirriam Monnatlale and Gretel and Theo Buttress along with Bantwana College player-manager Maizie Buttress and player Summer Buttress, coached the U11 and U13 Mzimhlope United Football Club’s soccer boys at Anchor Comprehensive High School.

The young soccer players use the cones that were donated by Bantwana College Football Club.

The teams they coached are grassroots development teams which have been registered for only six months.

“We coached the boys and taught the coaches some technical training drills to use to help improve their team,” said Theo.

“We also donated playing kit as well as some training equipment such as junior hurdles, and some training cones. Our training programme focuses on the technical aspects of the game such as agility, accuracy, ball control, awareness and ball coordination.”

Coach Gretel Buttress who has a SAFA D-Licence uses her experiences and knowledge to guide the young players.

Bantwana College Football Club has been working hard to give back to the community in various ways such as hosting training programmes for other clubs that need assistance.
