SPCA Randburg feels the love on Mandela Day

NORTH RIDING – Although no physical volunteering was allowed, many community members used their 67 minutes to donate a ton of animal food, blankets, and even some sweet treats.

Mandela Day this year was in stark contrast to every year prior to it due to Covid-19 restrictions, despite this, the community still showed their love for the Randburg SPCA.

Under Level 3 restrictions, the SPCA like many charities and organisations, were not allowed to host volunteers for Mandela Day on 18 July. It was the quietest Mandela Day the society has ever seen but with the sour comes the sweet. Although no physical volunteering was allowed, many community members used their 67 minutes to donate a ton of animal food, blankets, and even some sweet treats for the SPCA’s staff.

The Rotary Club of Northcliff stopped by at the society to deliver bags of food and blankets for the animals. Much-needed items were donated such as cleaning products, a wheelbarrow and stationary. “The number of donations we still received despite members of the public wanting to stay at home for safety reason, really warmed our hearts,” said general manager Craig Rudman. He acknowledged the time the community took out of their day to make sure the animals still felt the spirit of Madiba.

Rudman encouraged the loyal community to instead donate R67 in lieu of their 67 minutes for the remainder of Mandela Month.
