Local running clubs put a spring in your step
Run Zone's owner and chairperson, Graham Block said to get back into the swing of things, people who have not exercised much should take it easy.
If you want to get fit for spring, it is best not to train too hard too early.
So said Run Zone Athletics Club and Randburg Harriers, two well-established running clubs in Joburg.
“Warmer weather makes it easier to get up in the morning, and of course the sun rising earlier and setting later makes it safer to run now,” said Randburg Harriers club captain, John Neale.
“I foresee events opening again but some people have lost motivation to run because they used to run in groups and with the lockdown they could no longer do that.”
Run Zone’s owner and chairperson, Graham Block said to get back into the swing of things, people who have not exercised much should take it easy.
“If you are coming straight from the couch then set yourself a small goal like building up to running 5km, or try to walk one to three times per week,” he said.
“If you are an experienced runner but have been inactive, then still take it lightly and maybe train towards a 10km run.”
Neale agreed that running too hard too early was ill-advised as it could cause injury. Like Block, he advised that people should set themselves goals.
“Sports people in general, and runners especially, are goal-driven. So look for something you can aim towards. There are lots of virtual races and challenges around. Some of them are free and you can enter virtual races as far away as in Poland.”
Randburg Harriers and Run Zone have also been hosting virtual races during the lockdown, with much success.
