Local frontline worker shares experience working through Covid-19

OLIVEDALE – Netcare Olivedale Hospital deputy nursing manager Michael du Plooy sheds light on working during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Michael du Plooy is the deputy nursing manager at Netcare Olivedale Hospital and shared his experience as a frontline worker during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have worked under tremendous pressure and it’s important to mention that we have the same fears as all South Africans. Our profession, however, requires us to stand up and nurse, and that is just what we do,” said Du Plooy.

He added that due to the pandemic, patients and their families have become more anxious than usual. However, with constant communication being maintained between staff, patients and their families, they were able to continue to care for patients both compassionately and professionally. He said social workers have been introduced to bridge the communication gap and offer counselling to patients, families and staff.

“Relationships have been strained due to the volumes of patients coming in. The intensity of nursing care, both mentally and physically, is exhausting.”
Du Plooy expressed his pride in being part of the Netcare Olivedale Hospital team who have over the years displayed true team spirit which had served them well in any situation.

“Patients are our first priority and caring for them is the only goal we work towards… Nursing is a fulfilling career and I feel that I make a difference in people’s lives.”

During the pandemic, he said the nursing staff have worked well beyond their usual working hours.
“We need to be available 24/7. There have been many times when I have gone in on weekends and at night. We have done whatever we need to do to get through this.
“I have learnt that nurses are truly incredible. Through all of this our staff bring such positive energy to work, coming back every day to care for the sick.”
He urged people to play their part by wearing a mask, sanitise their hands regularly and adheres to social distancing to fight the spread of Covid-19.
