Local Treatment Centre Supports Miss SA’s #MindfulMondays
RANDBURG – Houghton House Addiction and Mental Health Centres support Miss South Africa 2020 Shudufhadzo Musida's #MindfulMondays initiative.
Monday 8 February marked the first instance of #MindfulMondays, an online initiative launched by Miss South Africa 2020 Shudufhadzo Musida. Dr David Webb of Houghton House Addiction and Mental Health Treatment Centres weighed in on the initiative from a healthcare perspective.
“The Houghton House Addiction and Mental Health Treatment Centres is proud to support Miss South Africa 2020, Shudufhadzo Musida in her exciting initiative, #MindfulMondays. It is so important to raise awareness, dismantle stigmas and show that it is not only okay, but imperative, to talk about the mental health issues that affect so many of us,” began the treatment centre’s Dr David Webb.

Musida announced last year after she was crowned in October that she would be focused on mental health. The discussions take place on Musida’s Instagram live at 7pm every evening where she speaks to various specialists and public figures in the mental health space. The discussions are accessible to all who follow Miss South Africa on her Instagram @shudufhadzomusida and allow the audience to engage in real-time.
“Depression and anxiety are especially common in people. Furthermore, both of these (and other mental health issues) often drive people to seek refuge in excessive consumption of alcohol and sometimes other drugs, the effects of which can be devastating to that person, their family and their community,” continued Webb.
He added that substance abuse directly causes mental health issues. This included worsening depression, panic, fear, and intolerable feelings of isolation and disconnection. This leads to people being deprived of making sense of life, finding meaning in every day, and growing into who they could be.
“#MindfulMondays is a wonderful initiative – people need to know they are not alone. There are people to talk to who have come through this and who can provide encouragement, hope and perspective. And there is professional help at hand when it is needed.”
