Common robberies and theft out of motor vehicles a problem

RANDBURG – Police are warning residents of a rise in common robberies and theft out of motor vehicles.

The Randburg police would like to alert the community that common robberies and theft out of motor vehicles are becoming a problem.

Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said that in one incident on the morning of 5 February, a victim was waiting at an access gate on Kent Avenue in Ferndale, when approached by two suspects. “The suspects parked their vehicle behind his vehicle and threatened him before forcefully opening his car doors,” said Maja.

Suspects allegedly took his car keys and opened the back of the vehicle, taking various electronic items before fleeing the scene. “No one has been arrested and the matter is under investigation,” added Maja.

In other separate incidents, electronic items such as laptops were stolen from vehicles by breaking windows and forcing doors open. “These types of incidents are happening more, especially in the parking lots of shopping centres. We are pleading with the motorists not to leave their valuables in clear sight of the potential criminals,” warned Maja.

He said that it is advisable not to leave anything inside motor vehicles, especially valuable electronic items. “When doing your shopping, or going out for a quick cup of coffee, please take your valuables with you or leave them at home or work. Residents are encouraged to switch their laptops completely off and not leave them in sleep mode, as this will allow easy access to clear the electronic item or even steal personal information,” concluded Maja.
