Local resident turns 95

SHARONLEA – Granny Nora Steenkamp celebrates 95 years of life.

Local resident Nora ‘Granny Nora’ Steenkamp turned 95 years old on 11 February.

Born in Mafikeng, North West province, she has been a resident of Sharonlea since January 1998. Steenkamp moved to Randburg after her husband Warren was senselessly shot dead after returning from an evening out at Marula Sun in Mabopane on 22 January 1998.

Granny Nora is blessed with family-based all over the world. She has three children, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren living in the United States of America; a fifty-year-old granddaughter living in KwaZulu-Natal with her husband and two great-grandsons; and a grandson living in Johannesburg. Her youngest granddaughter is almost four years old and lives in Olivedale.

“Mom was born in 1926 in what was then called Mafikeng, which of course is where the international Boy Scout movement was started by Lord Baden Powell during the Anglo-Boer War,” said daughter Desireé Johnson.

The birthday celebrations started with a get-together of friends and family at a tea party in Sharonlea on 11 February and continued with a spa day on 13 February. The festivities were concluded with more family and friends in Olivedale on Valentine’s Day, a very special birthday amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
