Hyperion Drive excavation runs on for seven months

NORTH RIDING – Excavation on Hyperion Drive still unresolved since September last year.

Residents feel unsafe having to navigate an enormous trench on Hyperion Drive, North Riding.

Periodical water leaks have also developed on the site which was first excavated in September last year but has still not been filled and repaved.

A loose tape surrounds the trench which is roughly 40m long and 5m wide at its broadest part, and is edging into the side of the street.

“I have complained to the City of Johannesburg and the ward councillor many times but I am still waiting for this to be resolved,” lamented resident Jennifer Pillay.

“Pedestrians have to step into the road to get around this. It is also poorly marked and there is no lighting at night, so someone who does not know the area could easily drive into the ditch.”

Ward 101 councillor, Dalu Cele said the issue was in fact a City Power matter and not a Johannesburg Water one – which some residents were led to believe due to the frequent water leaks.

“I am aware of the issue. I have escalated the issue for months and City Power have responded to indicate some challenges that they have on the site regarding the trench,” Cele said.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Rampedi and Johannesburg Water external communications officer, Eleanor Mavimbela were contacted about the matter on 12 May.

Since then, Rampedi said he was still taking up the matter with City Power’s regional manager, and Mavimbela said she was also following up, but neither has been able to comment further yet.
