‘Tell’ your loved ones about the importance of organ donation

SUNDOWNER – Transplant Education for Living Legacies spreads awareness about the importance of becoming an organ donor.

Transplant Education for Living Legacies (Tell) visited the learners and staff of Curro Aurora to spread awareness about the importance of becoming an organ donor.

Their organisation aims to open up the conversation surrounding the importance of organ donation, encouraging people to ‘tell’ others about it.

Managing director of Tell Stella de Kock said, “We have #MakeItKnown, which focuses on informing your friends and relatives that it is your wish to become an organ donor and aims to break the stigmas surrounding it.

“Through years of collective experience in the field, we have identified various hurdles to organ transplantation in South Africa. The issues range from legal, to social, to stigmas and stereotypes. It is our mission to solve as many of these problems as possible, so that we can end the waiting list, together. The most important part of organ and tissue donation is conversation.”

Tell representatives visiting the school were either the recipients of an organ donation or were waiting for one themselves, allowing them to share expert advice with learners and staff members. They felt that being part of the NPO was a great way to pay it forward and make a difference in the transplant community.

“We have a wealth of information regarding the processes surrounding organ and tissue donation on our website, and any person contemplating potential organ donation is strongly encouraged to visit,” concluded de Kock.
