Over the past few years, the Linden police and their Community Police Forum have put a strong emphasis on helping to ensure the safety of local domestic workers.
“Crime affects everyone, and the safety and security of those who take care of homes when homeowners are away is always a priority,” said Linden police spokesperson Constable Takalani Matumba.
It is for this reason that the police and CPF have established a regular forum that allows domestic workers to be empowered through regular education and discussions with the police with an aim for increased safety. The forum also seeks to increase the security of the entire suburb.
The group informs domestic workers how to act and who to call during a crime and provides education on social crime prevention matters and health concerns.
“We see domestic workers as, not only the face of the community but its eyes and ears. Normally, when a domestic worker notices something wrong or out of place, they are the first ones to notify the police or security company.
“We tell our domestic workers to ‘be careful of dangers that you may not be aware of’ and notice the changes in the surrounding environment. If anything looks out of the ordinary, do not be afraid to report it,” added Matumba.
Matumba has encouraged domestic workers in the Linden area to join the group that will meet at different venues on the following dates:
- 2 June, 11am – Linden Police Station, Boundary Road, Linden
- 9 June, 11am – Silver Pine Park, Silver Pine Avenue, Malanshof
