Rand Park High School’s debutantes and squires recently participated in a ‘shadow serving’ evening at John Dory’s in Cresta Shopping Centre.
A shadow serving requires the learners to follow the waitrons who are employed by the restaurant and to liaise with customers, take orders, deliver food and refreshments and liaise with kitchen staff.
The school’s Heather Robinson said, “Fundraising opportunities are limited during the pandemic and we are grateful to John Dory’s Cresta for partnering with Rand Park High over the past three years to assist learners with acquiring new skills while raising money for the school.”
The learners encouraged their families and friends to visit the restaurant for the shadow serving and their support was overwhelming.
Robinson said that shadow servings are a popular way for schools to raise funds and many restaurant establishments have benefited from the increased patronage and business as a result of these initiatives.
Learners learn valuable and transferable skills such as customer service, communication and teamwork. They also learn practical skills such as the use of the point-of-sale system, organisation and listening to the customers and the kitchen team.
